steamer leaves on September the 27th, and reaches Trinidad on October 14th. Here Mr. Clementi would have to wait for one week for a steamer sailing from Trinidad on the 21st. October and reaching Demarara on the 23rd. October.

In these circumstances as the journey via
Canada would be the longer Mr. Clementi decided, with my approval,
to travel viê Siberia and I accordingly telegraphed to you on the
27714 11th. August as follows:-
"Clementi starts 27th. August via London: arrives

Demarara 9th. October*.
Mr. Clementi has represented to me that he has only recently returned to Hongkong from 10 months' leave, that his expenses in travelling to and from this Colony were heavy, that he made last month a refund of £160 to the Crown Agents for the Colonies, and that he will also be put to considerable immediate expense in settling his affairs in Hongkong prior to his departure. I have, therefore, authorized an advance to be made to him of £200 to be recovered through the Crown Agents in such manner as you may see fit to direct.

Hr. Clementi will be paid his salary in Hong- -kong up to and including the 27th. August and I assume that after that date he will draw half the pay of his new post and that he will therefore be able to draw on the Crown Agents when he reaches
London.
